HERSHEY 14 TRINITY 8
- The final score was a bit deceiving in this one. Hershey did win by a significant margin and dominated the majority of the second half but the Shamrocks provided them with their biggest challenge of the season to date.
Logan Calhoun opened the scoring for the Trojans less than a minute into the game and it looked like Hershey was going to over power Trinity. The Shamrocks quickly answered with a Kyle Scott (2 goals) goal off a great feed from Jesse Altmeyer (2 goals, 1 assist) and the back and forth scoring trend had begun. Knotted at 2 for the end of the first quarter Dave Sickler (2 goals), the stand out LSM for Hershey, found his first goal of the night in transition. Scott again answered for Trinity and kept it tied. The game was 4-4 with 8 minutes left in the second quarter and the Trojans began to take over. Hershey would go on a 4-1 run to end the half and take an 8-5 lead into halftime.
Trinity had dug in and got a much needed man up goal before the end of the half to prevent the game from getting to far away. They would need to prevent Hershey from separating in the third to have a shot at victory. Hershey would get the first two goals of the third quarter and go up 12-6 on a 8-2 offensive run to end the third quarter. By the middle of the fourth Coach Schein's squad had gone up 14-6 courtesy of a spectacular George Briggs one on one iso post-up roll shot. Coach Heisey showed there was no quit in the Rocks as he used two time outs late to setup up two CJ Sherlock (3 goals) goals.
Austin Bailey, despite the 14 goals, had an excellent day in the cage with 9 saves. Some of those saves were critical first half stops to keep it close. Hershey got to many doorstep looks for Bailey to have a shot at keeping it under 10. Trinity at one point dropped into a man-zone where they defended the distributor at X from top side of the crease crease. This seemed to work for a while, but Hershey's cutters are just to good at making great catches for good shots. Hershey did seem to struggle with turnovers and ball movement in set 6 v 6 situations. They did however have a tremendous amount of success in transition. Kyle Kondracki matched Bailey's performance with 9 saves of his own.
CARLISLE 8 NORTHERN YORK 2
- A slow offensive start marked the day for the Herd which would again lean on their top ranked defense to keep their opponents in check. Northern ended the first quarter up 1-0 when Carlisle had little momentum and struggled with ball movement. Coach Kidder's team was able to get a run going in the second frame to go up 3-1 at the half but the Polar Bears were still creeping up on their second upset opportunity of the week.
The second half belonged to the Herd as they would out score Northern 5-1 and take the win to remain undefeated at 9-0. It's a long season in Mid Penn play and not every game can be played perfectly. The Herd will hope it was just an off evening as they have a huge Commonwealth Division showdown at home against Trinity on Wednesday.
STATE COLLEGE 13 BISHOP MCDEVITT 7
- The Little Lions had seen their four game win streak come to an end at the hands of Lower Dauphin on Friday and were hoping to get back on track quickly against McDevitt. This game was tight as the end of the first quarter was tied 3-3. State College took over in the second going on a 5-0 run. The Crusaders tried to fight back outscoring State College 3-2 in the third, but State College regained control 3-1 in the fourth for a 13-7 win. Brady Franks (5 goals, 1 assist) and Luc Michael (3 goals, 1 assist) again were the majority of State College's offense. They clearly live and die by the two man game.
McDevitt found much needed leading scores in Christian Fairfax (3 goals) and Nick Suknaic (3 goals). Every cloud has a silver lining and for the Crusaders and Coach Walter it was a decent day offensively and the fact they were able to battle with a good Mid Penn team three out of the four quarters of play. They'll look to put a complete game together on Wednesday at home against Mechanicsburg.
LOWER DAUPHIN 14 MECHANICSBURG 4
- This one belonged to the Falcons from the opening whistle. Mechanicsburg had a great look from Quinn Dolan to get on the board first but the ball seemingly got stuck on a bounce shot in the grass. From their it was all LD. The Falcons rattled off 3 quick scores in route to an 8-1 first half lead. They were able to score at will it seemed with dodges from the top, strong outside shooting from Mike Mattis (6 goals), and quick ball movement on man up plays. Brandon Foster recorded 4 goals of his own and Justin Guevarez had a great day in the net with 11 saves.
The Wildcats have had their struggles but showed great resolve by continuing to fight in the second half and playing much better lacrosse. Sophmore Jaryn Ruth recorded his first career goal and Sophmore Sam Shipman showed talent on an excellent dodge to the cage. The Wildcats have now dropped 3 straight by a margin of 10 or more goals. They will look to get things headed in the right direction on both sides of the ball Wednesday night at McDevitt.
CRESTWOOD 19 CD EAST 8
- For East there is some moral victory in their largest offensive output of the year. Until yesterday their high on the season for goals scored was 4, they doubled that against Crestwood. At this point there is some concern of a win less less season for the Panthers. For CD East it is not all about wins and losses, but establishing a better program for the future. They have a lot of young men who pour their heart into the game and will continue to fight.
