MID PENN REPORT - 4/29/14

HEMPFIELD 9 CARLISLE 5
- The Herd went on the road yesterday to face a quality out of conference opponent in Hempfield. Hailing from the Lancaster-Lebanon division Carlisle knew they would have to play their A game against a 12-2 Black Knights squad.
Unlike Thursday's contest with Hershey the Herd would not get off to a fast start. In fact it was the exact opposite. Hempfield was able to get up 3-0 at the end of the first and then 5-1 by the half time. If there is a strategy to beating Coach Kidders boys this it. Get out in front early and force Carlisle out of the ball control offense they are most comfortable in.If it's close or Carlisle is ahead they will hold the ball for long offensive series, wear down your defense, and put a tremendous amount of pressure on your offense with their great defense and Bowser in the net.
The Black Knights would make it 9-3 by the start of the fourth and the distance would be to much for Carlisle to make up. Collin Wallace would have 3 goals on the day and Max Breschi managed 2 scores and an assist. Bowser had a day he may want to forget with only 5 saves. Hempfield was led by Zach Ward and his 3 scores. Carlisle will need to use this as a learning experience for post season play.

NORTHERN YORK 6 PALMYRA 5
- The Cougars suffer yet another close defeat. They are now 7-7 with six of those seven losses coming by a total of 10 points. Palmyra was sitting at 18 for districts but with back to back losses to State College and Northern they will most likely fall out of the hunt for the top 16. Coach Gatano's squad will undoubtedly look back at this season and wonder what might have been as they have been so close so many times.
For the Polar Bears that is now four straight wins against some good competition with a quality win over Palmyra. CD awaits on Thursday and if Coach Millers team can run it to five straight against the Rams what a turn around this would be.
This game was tight early with a 3-2 Northern lead at the end of the first. The Polar Bears got some separation headed into the half up 6-3. Palmyra would inch back to within two, 6-4, at the start of the fourth but were unable to even things up late. Grant Rutter (3 goals) and Zack Martick (2 goals, 2 assists) led the Northern offense. Nick Mazzocca (2 goals, 2 assists) and Cam Ihli (2 goals) led the Cougars. Joey Hess was clearly a focal point for the Northern defense as they kept him to just 2 assists on the day. Sam Wasson again played great in the cage for Palmyra with 13 saves.

CENTRAL DAUPHIN 11 CD EAST 1
- Rivalry games are always enjoyable especially in the only instance where we see two clubs from the same district face off. CD has long been the superior to a CD East program still trying to find its way in the Mid Penn. A lot of these players grew up playing lacrosse, or other sports, together and it was good fun to see them take the field last night.
Youth night provided an exciting atmosphere for halftime in a game that saw CD cruise to victory. The Rams were up 4-0 at the end of the first and gained separation to make it 10-0 the half. In a class move Coach Driscoll elected not to run up the score as the final would be 11-1.

CHAMBERSBURG 11 MECHANICSBURG 1
- The Trojans have now won 3 of 4 and are playing .500 ball late into the season. All though districts is most likely out of reach they still have plenty to play for the rest of the way. This was a solid win for Chambersburg on a day that saw 4 players score 4 or more points. Led by Grant Swisher (2 goals and 2 assists) with JT Hopple (3 goals) and Nick Lombardozzi (2 goals, 1 assist) also having nice days on the road.
For the Wildcats the losses continue, now 9 in a row, but we are starting to see improvement. Eddie Martin was solid in the cage with his second start (13 saves) and they held the Trojans to a 3-1 score in the second half. Defensively with Martin in the cage they looked solid for most of the game. Offensively they continue to struggle to find rhythm and consistent possession. Donnie Houseal had the Cat's lone goal.

  1. Bowser had way more than 5 saves. Their stat guy is either blind or doesn't like him.

    1. We were not at the game so we can not say. Some saves, lie, errors in baseball are subjective to the book keeper.

As a general point stat keeping in the Mid Penn needs to improve. Often times it parents who get caught up watching the game/their child and have little knowledge of the sport. Sometimes it is young High School kids their for service hours. Goalie stats seem to be some of the least reliable. Again we can't speak to Bowsers numbers specifically but we do recognize that book keeping and stat reporting is an area we need to see improvement in.
