CARLISLE 9 TRINITY 3
- This one had a lot on the line for both squads. The Herd was looking to maintain their undefeated season by moving to 10-0, gain commanding control of the Commonwealth Division, and continue their quest for back-to-back Mid Penn titles. Trinity was aiming to rebound from Monday's loss to Hershey and take the next step towards their first Commonwealth, and possibly Mid Penn, title. Only one team would be able to achieve their goals and on this night it was the Herd.
This game would start slow and somewhat sloppy for both teams in a first half that was all about two great defenses. Carlisle led 2-1 at halftime and both goalies, Bowser and Bailey, were playing very well. Carlisle has been known for their defense for sometime now, but Trinity earned the respect of Coach Kidder and has to be recognized as one of the top defenses in the area. The problem became the Shamrocks were playing two much defense and they began to wear down. Their lone first half goal came through transition so even that provided little relief for the D. As the pressure mounted on the Trinity offense things began to crumble.
Jon Mundell opened the second half scoring for Carlisle with a goal one minute into the third quarter. From their the flood gates opened as the Herd would go on to a 3-0 third quarter and take a commanding 5-1 lead into the final frame. Another four unanswered goals followed as the Herd separated to a 9-1 lead and the eventual win.
This all but sets up the Mid Penn Title game to be another rematch of Carlisle and Hershey. Hershey has run away with the Keystone Division and Trinity now trails Carlisle by 2.5 games with not enough time and to much depending on other teams to get back in the hunt. It would be nice to see a four team post season where the Shamrocks could regroup, continue to improve, and play Carlisle at a neutral field. If nothing else we would gain two more exciting games to go along with the championship game.
Box score wise the day belonged to Carlisle's all-time leading scorer Max Breschi who tallied four goals and Collin Wallace who managed three of his own.
PALMYRA 9 LAMPETER STRAUSGBURG 4
- Lampeter Strausburg got out to an early 2-0 lead at the end of the first quarter when the Cougars tightened their belt defensively and went to work on the offensive side of the ball. They would out score their opponent the rest of the way 9-2 in large part due to Joey Hess's 3 goal, 1 assist performance. He was aided on the offensive side of the ball by Trevor Frye and Nick Mazzacco who each had 2 goals. This game marked another stand out performance by sophomore long pole Tyler Gallagher who had 7 forced turnovers, 5 ground balls, and 1 assist. This was a nice out of conference win for Palmyra as they get ready for tonight's bought with Hershey at home.
BISHOP MCDEVITT 14 MECHANICSBURG 7
- In terms of championship games, district playoffs, and other post season thoughts this game had little riding on it. In terms of the players, coaches, and fans it was clearly a game that mattered to both sides. Coaches Walter and Brisbane each had their players ready to go in what would be a back and forth battle most of the night. Both these programs are young and developing so when the opportunity for a Mid Penn win comes along it makes sense they put it all on the line.
McDevitt's Griffin Hanes got the scoring started early and it looked like another slow start for the Wildcats but they were able to answer quickly and they would go back and forth from there on. The Crusaders would lead the first half 2-1 and then get some separation headed to halftime on a 5-3 lead which was shouldered by Hanes 4 goals.
Mechanicsburg dug deep during halftime and came out fast scoring three unanswered for a 6-5 lead in the third. Walter was able to start opening up more scores and hitting outside shots to starts McDevitt's march to victory. Chrisitian Fairfax led the momentum changing late in the third as McDevitt would go onto get up 10-7 with 8:00 minutes in the fourth quarter. Mechanicsburg started to pressure the ball in hopes of a turnover which opened up more dodging lanes and they could not get the ball away from McDevitt as the Crusaders put the game out of reach.
The leading scorers on the day for McDevitt were G Hanes (5 goals), J Hanes (2 goals), Fairfax (2 goals), Suknaic (2 goals), and Zweigart (2 goals). The Wildcats had 5 players get involved in the scoring led by seniors Aaron Heisey and Quinn Dolan with 2 goals a piece.
CUMBERLAND VALLEY 14 CHAMBERSBURG 9
- The Eagles came out fired up and jumped out to an 8-1 first quarter lead. Chambersburg would try and fight back the rest of the evening. At 10-4 by halftime CV was able to wrap this one up early and never really had a doubt beyond the opening whistle.
Nick Zumbrum has been a man on a mission as of late as he managed four goals on the day. Rod Jameison and Tommy Lehman were able to score three a piece and it really seems like Coach Bogazyck's offense has found an excellent rhythm as of late with a variety of players now able to score.
For Chambersburg the book is out and teams are locking on in their two man combo of Nick Lombardozzi and Jake Pierson. JT Hopple has become a threat for them as well. All nine goals for the Trojans came from these three players (three scores each).
