GREATEST ATTACK IN THE HISTORY OF THE MID PENN?

On Saturday the familiar names of Logan Calhoun, George Briggs, and Jake Wilson ended their careers as a group in Mid Penn play with a 15-7 win over Carlisle for Hershey's 3rd Mid Penn Title in the last 4 seasons. It was fitting conclusion as all three were involved in their typical fashion. Combining for 9 goals and 7 assists they moved the ball extremely well, dodged in a timely fashion, and continually found the open man (often times one another) for high percentage shots on the door step.

They will look to continue their run into districts on Tuesday night and hopefully beyond to states. We wanted to take a minute to exam their remarkable achievements as a group in 2014. Individually all three are extremely talented players but together they will leave a legacy in the area that is perhaps unmatched.

More after the jump.

Obviously there is no definitive measure to who is the best attack group, best grouping at any position, or best individual player as this is a team sport and there are a variety of factors. We simply think this was a group whose ability and achievements may not be seen for some time.

In Hershey they don't rebuild they reload so with players like Clark, Bowser, and Baker before them it took a minute for these three players to get time on the field together on a regular basis. Once they did it was clear they were special. Combining for 150 goals, 108 assists, and 258 total points all three finished in the top five of league scores in total points. Wilson led the league in goals at 58, Briggs led the league in assists at 57, and Calhoun was the hybrid of the two with 86 total points finishing second in goals (54) and 5th in assists (32). Calhoun and Joey Hess were the only two players with top 5 finishes in both categories.

We did some research and although record keeping gets a little less reliable the further you go back this years Hershey attack has been one of the most statistically successful in the six years the Mid Penn has existed as it is currently formed. Last seasons Calhoun, Briggs, and Clark on Hershey (179 goals, 149 assists, 328 points)  bested them statistically but beyond these two no other team came close to having a group of players at one position so prominent in the stat book. For total points they finished 1 (Briggs 95), 2 (Calhoun 86) and 4 (Wilson 77). The only other program to have 3 top 5 finishers in scoring in the past six seasons was the 2010 Harrisburg Academy with Dill (86), Miller (75) and Wolfe (52) and they were not all on attack.

Each season provides changes in game strategy and play that can heavily affect stats. Hershey pulled back their offensive attack in a lot of game they had in hand often times in the first half this season and additionally there were some games missed by players that affected this as well (not to say this wasn't a factor for other players or teams).  The fact that these three were able to recapture the Mid Penn Title also plays into our thinking that they may be better than last seasons trio. How far they are able to go this post season may be the greatest indicator to where they fall in comparison to other units. In any case the Trojans attack the past two seasons has set a precedent that will be difficult for any group after to match.

Calhoun will end his playing career with Hershey (hopefully with a few more medals) over the next few weeks while Briggs and Wilson will return next season as seniors with junior Joe Olives (15 goals, 5 assists) and be poised to make another strong argument in this category.

We are very curious to hear your thoughts on this group and any other grouping of players at attack or any other position who you believe were a special. Comment below!
