Max Breschi has lacrosse in his genes.
His dad, Dave, was Carlisle’s first boys’ lacrosse coach. He was also an All-American lax player at Denison University.
Breschi’s uncle, Joe, is the University of North Carolina’s head men’s lacrosse coach.
“Lacrosse,” Carlisle’s senior said, “is definitely in my blood.”
Max, a four-year starter attack man for the Thundering Herd, helped Carlisle win the Mid-Penn title last spring.
This spring, the Herd are thinking repeat; Carlisle is off to a scorching 10-0 start in Mid-Penn Commonwealth play, knocked off Keystone leader Hershey, and is hopeful for another shot at the Trojans and a Mid-Penn repeat.
Earlier this season, Breschi became Carlisle’s all-time leading goal-scorer; through 14 games this season, he’s popped in a team-leading 36 goals, to go along with 18 assists for a team-best 54 points.
Breschi will continue his lax career at Bates College in Maine; Bobcats’ coach Peter Lasagna used to coach with Joe, Max’s uncle — another family tie-in.
Breschi had another great influence in the house growing up; his older sister, Madison, was a field hockey, swimming and soccer standout for Carlisle, and she was an All-American field hockey player for Kenyon College last fall.
Madison was also a Travers Award finalist in 2012, and she earned 12 varsity letters during her time with the Herd.
Breschi scored a pair of goals in Carlisle’s 10-6 win over rival Hershey last week. We played five questions with Breschi after the game …
WHAT’S IT MEAN TO BE THE PROGRAM’S ALL-TIME LEADING GOAL-SCORER — “It’s a great feeling, definitely. But without my teammates and without my coaches pushing me, I wouldn’t have been able to do it. So I give all the credit to those guys. Without them, I’d be nothing; all the credit goes to them.”
YOU CRACKED THE STARTING LINE-UP AS A FRESHMAN. WHAT WAS THAT LIKE — “We started four or five freshmen that year, so it was hectic. We were all running around kind of wide-eyed and it was hard to slow things down. But over the years, as we’ve grown, the game has slowed down.”
CARLISLE WON THE MID-PENN TITLE LAST SPRING. TELL US ABOUT THE STATE OF THE PROGRAM — “Carlisle has a great tradition for lacrosse. Our youth program is starting to pick it up, and those guys will be ready to step in and take over our positions. We have a lot of good athletes coming up. We’re starting to set the bar high, and that also means higher expectations. I feel like we have the right guys in the program who can handle that.”
DID MADISON HELP YOU WITH SPORTS GROWING UP — “She set the bar really high for me, and I’m always trying to hit that bar and keep up with her. I keep trying to take it to the next level like she did. She was a great influence for me. I can’t thank her enough.”
WHERE IS MID-PENN AND DISTRICT 3 BOYS’ LACROSSE IN THE GRAND SCHEME OF THINGS — “I feel like we’re pretty high up there. I think we’re still on the way up and I think we’re catching up to the Philadelphia teams. We’re trying. We’re doing our best. I think there are a lot of great players out there flowing through programs. Who knows? Maybe one day soon you’ll see a state champion come from here. If you look at the power rankings, you’ll see some Mid-Penn teams on there. And the Mid-Penn teams are competing with the Lancaster teams.”
