Matt Healey, Cumberland Valley High School’s new boys’ lacrosse coach, promises to continue the program’s winning ways.
“We are playing for a state championship,” said Healey. “We’re going to be coaching to win the Mid-Penn finals, finish in the top three in districts, and do the best we can in the state playoffs.”
Healey was recently appointed to succeed Coach A.J. Bogaczyk, who resigned in July. In his final year as head coach, Bogaczyk led the team to an overall 21-4 record and into its first-ever District 3 final and PIAA semifinal.
Healey, an agent with Lemoyne-based RSR, REALTORS® gained recognition for helping Trinity High School reach district playoffs twice during his three years as offensive coordinator. He played lacrosse at Villa Julie College, now Stevenson University, in Owings Mills, Maryland.
He first fell in love with the game as a fourth grader at The Harrisburg Academy, he said.
“I love the fast pace, the agility and finesse that’s involved. This sport is growing as well as the competition,” he said. “As a coach, I love watching the kids grow, not only in the game of lacrosse, their skills and athletic ability, but watching them grow into young men.”
The 2016 CV boys’ lacrosse team is young, with “a few seniors that are very good leaders,” Healey said.
“Our offense we’ll be very talented. We’ll be fast,” he said. “On defense, we’ll have some big talented players I truly believe will step up to the plate.”
He believes in communicating expectations to the players – attend and set a game plan for every practice, and know the systems, for instance – so they get to know him and his priorities. Players “are depending on you to make them better,” he said.
Healey also uses his sports-honed communications skills in his real estate career.
“Sometimes, your clients are making the biggest purchase of their lives or selling a home,” he said. “If you communicate with them on every level, then any transaction will have no surprises and go a lot more smoothly.”
Healey lives in midtown Harrisburg. He expects to continue building the boys’ lacrosse team into a strong community.
“It doesn’t just stop with the players,” he said. “It’s also about the faculty and parents being part of the programs success.”
