"Not long after the PIAA Board shifted the football landscape, a motion to suspend protocol and offer expansion to additional team sports was initiated by District 12 Chairman Robert B. Coleman. The next 15 minutes were a blur. By a favorable 23-7 vote, baseball, softball and basketball were lifted to six classifications. In addition, girls’ volleyball and boys’ and girls’ soccer expanded to four classes, and field hockey advanced to three. The final move was a second class for lacrosse. Lombardi said all classifications in these sports would be set before the next scheduled BOD meeting on Dec. 17." - PENNLIVE.COM
A lot of opinions coming on this major news for the sport in our area and how it affects local teams. One initial concern is increased travel and costs for programs. A more level playing field based on school size is a clear plus. Classifications are based on enrollment size which is done every two years. Districts are providing current enrollment figures by October 15th of this year. Districts can choose to "play up" if they choose.
