2016 Boys Lacrosse Preview Capsules
CARLISLE THUNDERING HERD
Coach: Steve Kidder (17 seasons)
Class: AAAA
Division: Mid-Penn Commonwealth
Last year: 10-6 (9-3)
Playoffs: Lost to Manheim Township in District 3-AAAA first round, 14-7.
Key losses: Drew Amsley, attack; Tim Roesler, midfield; Justin Moore, midfield; Matt Fuller, goalie; Chad Goodheart, defense; Connor Amsley, midfield.
Key returnees: Nate Barnes, Jr., defense; Ryan Godfrey, So., attack; George Faller, Jr., attack; Phillip Weis, Jr., long pole midfielder; Derrick Coleman, Sr., midfield.
Key newcomers: Rajen Porcopio, Fr., midfield; Titus Clark, So., midfield; Gavyn Barnes, So., midfield; Donovan Wallace, Fr., midfield; Kieran Wallace, So., attack.
First game: Saturday at Penn Manor, 1:15
Breakdown: After dropping a first round district loss to Manheim Township, the Thundering Herd will look to get back on track and move a lot farther in this year’s postseason. With the departures of front line snipers like the Amsley brothers — Drew and Connor — and defensive backbones in Matt Fuller and Chad Goodheart, the Herd will have some holes to fill. Then again, Ryan Godfrey and Nate Barnes can step into the leadership roles to accommodate for the the lack of depth and inexperience still plaguing the team.
MORE AFTER BREAK
CUMBERLAND VALLEY EAGLES
Coach: Matt Healey (1st season)
Class: AAAA
Division: Mid-Penn Commonwealth
Last year: 24-4 (11-1)
Playoffs: Lost to Manheim Township in District 3-AAAA semifinals, 8-3; Lost to St. Joe’s Prep in PIAA Class AAAA semifinals, 19-7.
Key losses: John Miller; Rod Jamison; CJ Sherlock; John Tartline; Sean Park; Matt Dengler.
Key returnees: Josh Ferguson, Sr., defense; Matt Hager, Jr., defense; Jeff Hamlin, Sr., midfield; Nicolas Brown, Sr., goalie; Devon Heckman, Jr., midfield; Stevie Peters, Jr., attack; Clayton Miller, So., attack; Mitch Schalles, So., midfield; Jackson Wilken, So., midfield; Conner Ball, Jr., attack.
Key newcomers: Jake Palmer, So., midfield; Nick Sather, So., attack; Owen Seeber, Sr., midfield; Maxwell Seeber, So., defense; Chase Young, So., defense.
First game: Tuesday at Palmyra, 5:30
Breakdown: The big blow to Cumberland Valley’s front line will be the losses of Sherlock, Miller and Jamieson. The big-time scorers have left holes that will need to be filled by veterans — look out for Jeff Hamlin, Clayton Miller and Stevie Peters — or newcomers that can take the reigns. Their defensive squad still has some of the key returners from last season in Nic Brown and Josh Ferguson. After two semifinals losses last season, both in districts and states, CV will be looking for nothing more than a title. It’s a tall order for incoming coach Matt Healey, but his roster is stacked — even with the key losses.
MECHANICSBURG WILDCATS
Coach: Scott Brisbane (3rd season)
Class: AAAA
Division: Mid-Penn Commonwealth
Last year: 4-14 (2-10)
Playoffs: Did not qualify

Key returnees: Sam Moyer, Jr., defense; Andrew Butz, Sr., goalie; Gracen Hilsinger, Sr., midfield; David Thomson, Jr., defense; Jaryn Ruth, Sr., midfield; Sam Shipman, Sr., midfield; Tanner Martin, Sr., defense; Preston Peters, So., midfield; Alec Martin, Jr., midfield; Reagan Pritchett, Sr., midfield; Nate Taylor, Sr., midfield; Sam McDonald, Jr., defense; Brendan Johns, Jr., midfield; Luke Gutshall, Jr., forward; Nick Miller, Sr., midfield; Dylan VanNostrand, Jr., midfield.
Key newcomers: Keegan Hurley, So., attack; Zack Inhut, Fr., attack; Lee Patton, Fr., forward.
Next game: Tuesday at Dover, 4:15
Breakdown: As a young team, the Wildcats are still learning. With most of the team returning to continue their trek towards a more competitive season, not many holes will need to be filled. Alec Martin and Reagan Pritchett come back for another season and will step into bigger leadership roles for the team — especially after racking up 17 and 11 goals, respectively, to lead the team. The biggest loss for the team may be Jack Moyer, notching an impressive 14 goals and two assists last season.
NORTHERN POLAR BEARS
Coach: Chris Newman (1st season)
Class: AAAA
Division: Mid-Penn Commonwealth
Last year: 7-11 (4-8)
Playoffs: Did not qualify
Key losses: n/a
Key returnees: Andrew Sade, Sr., attack; Derek Myers, Sr., midfield; Nick Roman, Sr., defense; Jarred Hayes, Jr., goalie; Jon Heller, Jr., midfield; Chad Cherok, Jr., midfield; Jake Goretski, Jr., defense; Josh Petery, Sr., attack; Jarrod Kearns, Sr., attack; Noah Brenizer, Sr., defense; Dylan Spanier, Jr., defense.
Key newcomers: n/a
Next game: Monday at Spring Grove, 6:30
Breakdown: With the main goal for the Polar Bears being a competitive season, they undoubtedly have the roster to achieve that goal. Derek Myers returns as last season’s leading point scorer for the Bears, with 37 last season, he will step into the veteran leadership role alongside Josh Petery, who had 14 points last season.
TRINITY SHAMROCKS

Key newcomers: Danny Tare, Jr., midfield, transfer; Matt Wilson, Jr., defense, transfer; Dom Gaito, Jr., long stick midfield, transfer; Drew Zak, Fr., long stick midfield.
First game: Monday at Lewisburg Area, 4
Breakdown: Coming into the season just shy of 100 wins (99-51 in 10 seasons) in his coaching career, head coach Dave Heisey will look for that coveted win in their opening day match against Lewisburg Area. Only losing a few players may be the biggest break for the Shamrocks as they head into the season with a stacked squad rearing to go for another postseason run. Although losing their top tier goal scorer, Mark Hergenroeder, younger brother Steve is there to step into the role alongside 41-goal scorer Mark Mandak, and Commonwealth points leader Jesse Altmeyer.
