Mid Penn Report - 3/25

MID PENN REPORT - 3/25/14

TRINITY 8 CUMBERLAND VALLEY 5
- The rivalry game lived up to the hype in a close battle between west shore neighbors Trinity and CV. Mitch Kleist and Kyle Scott took the Shamrocks to an early 2-0 lead. Rod Jamison answered for the Eagles and then junior John Miller took over and got Trinity ahead 5-1. Bowman brought it back to 5-2 in the 3rd, followed by a CJ Sherlock goal for Trinity to move it to 6-2. CV got two more goals in the to keep it close until Miller scored the final two of his four goals in route to making the final score 8-5.
The theme of this rivalry has been forged in the idea of CV youth players now on the Trinity roster and Miller, if he and his brother weren't already, is the face of this. Coach Heisey has bested CV in four of his last five meetings.
It's still early in the season, but the Shamrocks looked more vulnerable tonight than they had in their first two games. They are 3-0 winning three games in five days. Coach Bogaczyk opens the season with a loss, but a competitive game from his team against a mid pen elite has to be satisfying on some level even if the result is disappointing. The commonwealth division may not be the two horse race that was first predicted. The Eagles could very well be a much more difficult matchup than first assumed and with their young roster (heavily noted last year) you have to imagine they will only be getting better as the season goes on.

STATE COLLEGE 7 MECHANICSBURG 2
- The wildcats, coming off a double overtime victory, had high hopes for their first road bout and Mid Penn match of the season. State College has been a legitimate Mid Penn force over the past few years and this would show Coach Brisbane and his squad a thing or two about where they stood. The Little Lions on the other hand were looking to bounce back from a difficult opening loss of 8-1 with Parkland.
Things were close at the half with a 3-2 score, but State college got separation in the 3rd moving it to 5-2. Mechanicsburg held fast, but once they started to pressure and looked to be more aggressive on defense State College put the nails in the coffin winning 7-2.
Eddie Martin led the Wildcats with both goals and senior midfielder Arron Heisey recorded their lone assist. The most impressive stat of the day came from senior goalie Joe Becker who had 20 saves on 27 shots (74%). Brady Franks scored two goals and had one assist to lead the little lions.

NORTHERN YORK 9 LOWER DAUPHIN 8 (OT)
- LD Came out strong with a 3-0 lead at the end of the first. The second quarter belonged to Northern as they scored 7 goals and took a 7-4 lead. The third would go to the Falcons as they dug back in and got the score to 8-6. The Falcons continued to turn the momentum in the 4th and were able to knot the game up at 8-8 and send it to over time. Luke Lynes stepped up and hit the game winner for the Polar Bears to send them 2-0. LD loses their second straight Mid Penn game and falls to 0-2 on the season. Kevin Beaver led LD with 4 goals.

CENTRAL DAUPHIN 8 PALMYRA 5
- Palmyra was coming into CD's opener hot off two convincing victories over the weekend. Their first Mid Penn game was going to be Keystone opponent Central Dauphin and figured to be a difficult test and early season barometer for where they stood. The Rams jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first and managed to keep a lead the rest of the way. 4-2 at the half the Cougars were not out of it by any stretch and when the 4th started the score was 6-4, anyone's game. CD kept the consistent scoring going to win 8-5, managing to score 2 goals in each quarter.
Carson Wolford led CD with 3 goals. He was followed by Eli Hudson's 2 goals and 1 assist. Palmyra's offensive leader Joey Hess did not have the huge numbers we have seen in his first two games but managed 2 goals and 1 assist. Close defender Tyler Gallagher had a great evening with 1 goal, 3 forced turnovers, and 8 ground balls.
