MID PENN REPORT - 4/10/14

TRINITY 9 NORTHERN 7
- The real joy of high school lacrosse could be seen last night at COBO field. Coming into the game Trinity was 5-0 and had won all their games with relative ease with exception of an unusual road trip against Exeter Township. Northern was 2-2 with only one Mid Penn contest that went to overtime against LD (they won 9-8). On paper this one looked like it would go to the Rocks...
Of course games aren't played on paper and in this league on any given night every team has a chance. Coach Miller's squad was clearly hyped for the game and gave it everything they had. Mitch Kleist (2 goals) got the games opening goal off a Trinity clear to go up 1-0 early in the first. Sam Haak (2 goals) was able to answer for the Polar Bears and the scoring had begun. Junior CJ Sherlock had a Canadian box move to the cage and tied the game up at 2 late in the first, a sloppy transition for Trinity led to Northern taking the lead 3-2, and then Connor Bailey (1 goal, 1 assist) was able to fin Sophomore attackman Jesse Altmeyer (3 goals) on the doorstep to tie it at 3-3 to end the first.
Northern would get the first goal of the second quarter on a wrap around goal from X. Sherlock was able to answer with spectacular dodging to the cage to get it even at 4. Northern took advantage of a man up situation and led at the half 5-4. Everyone in the stadium realized at this point that this was going to be a game till the final buzzer.
The third quarter was very unique in that there were multiple stoppages in play for flags/discussion on the field and two stick checks following goals. Additionally, the new zero tolerance approach to conduct on the field was apparent and had a significant effect. Bailey got his only goal of the game in the 3rd and John Miller (1 goal, 2 assists) found Altmeyer on a great feed to get Trinity up 6-5. This was followed by a bizarre two flag situation that led to a 5v5 goal for Northern and then Zac Martich (2 goals) found the goal for the second time in the game to end the 3rd with Northern up 7-6.
Coach Heisey's team resolve was being tested and they answered with a spectacular fourth quarter. Tim Hickey and the defense shut Northern out in the final frame while Austin Bailey (10 saves) made two clutch saves late. Mitch Kleist would score the tie goal on a hard drive from GLE. John Miller, who Northern had been locking off all night, was able to get a great feed from Connor Bailey who created a opportunity on a hard ride which allowed Miller put it in the net for the go ahead goal. Miller continued to take over the game with a great look to Altmeyer for the final goal of the game.
Both team battled all night and this was one of the better games we have seen all season. Northern had a great effort from goal keeper Zach Shumberger (9 saves) and their defense all night.
